Boar’s Hill, Oxford. Augt 6. 1919. Masefield -- returned from Ireland -- describes an ‘unreal’, pre-war atmosphere there and pronounces himself happy to be back in ‘old bankrupt revolutionary England’; reports being ‘sad not to see Mr Rickards’; asks Bull about “the art of the Circus” in America; distinguishes between Barnum’s ‘menagerie’ and that ‘magic circle under a tent’ he loves best; details children, “the real artists”, a beautiful “Cora”, a clown in spots ‘wittier than most poets’; quips that if revolution comes to England the Masefields will all ‘join a circus and travel the world in a van’ (cartoon of a caravan with horse-drawn vans); offers final thoughts to Bull, her Aunts and Brother, and the Queen of China by Edward Shanks.
